Gas

The Gas sector included in EnergyUtilities covers Transmission and Distribution

In the context of EnergyUtilities careers, the Gas Industry is the sector that supplies natural gas via transmission and distribution pipelines and LPG gas via cylinders to a variety of customers including domestic and manufacturing.

It does not refer to the extraction of gas from its source (which is part of the Process Manufacturing industry) nor the installation or maintenance of gas appliances within domestic or manufacturing environments.

The gas industry is a major supplier of energy to Australian homes and factories supplying around 30% of industry energy needs and 20% of domestic needs. Gas is supplied in form of natural gas, which is carried by pipeline systems or as Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) which is carried in cylinders. When natural gas is chilled to minus 160 degrees it forms Liquid Natural Gas or LNG which can also be carried in tankers or cylinders.

Some of the jobs in the technical sector of the gas industry include:

  • Engineers and technicians
  • Project managers
  • Line managers and supervisors
  • Field operatives
This could involve one or more of the following:
  • Design of transmission/distribution/processing/storage systems
  • Construction and maintenance of those systems
  • Commissioning and decommissioning of systems
  • Metering and billing of customers
Technological innovation, the range of work activities, and varied occupations involved in the gas industry provide exciting career opportunities for people with the right aptitude and motivation.
